CryoSCOPE: Muography for Snow and Frozen Soil Monitoring

Tracking snow and permafrost changes in real time

Understanding snowpack and frozen soil dynamics is crucial for predicting climate impacts, water resources, and natural hazards in cold regions. The CryoSCOPE project develops advanced monitoring techniques to improve climate models and support adaptation strategies.

Within CryoSCOPE, Muon Solutions is leading the development of muographic monitoring for snow and frozen soil density. We will install muon detectors in Finland and use them for tracking seasonal changes in snow and permafrost with continuous, high-resolution data. This method complements traditional snow surveys and satellite observations, improving predictions for industries like hydropower, forestry, and agriculture.

By applying muography to cryospheric research, we help advance climate science, hazard prediction, and sustainable resource management in Arctic and mountain environments.
