Mine.Io: Muography in Flooded Mines

Developing underwater mobile muography

The goal of the Mine.Io project is to revolutionise mining through automation, robotisation, and resource optimisation. A key challenge is studying flooded mines, where conventional exploration methods are limited.

Within Mine.Io, Muon Solutions develops specialised underwater muon detectors to image submerged mine structures. In collaboration with our project partners, we are designing waterproof casings to withstand deep-water pressures and ensuring reliable battery-powered operations in extreme conditions. Additionally, we are enhancing our software for improved data interpretation and visualisation.

The detectors are tested in a flooded open-pit quarry in Portugal. They will be deployed by autonomous AI-driven underwater robots developed by our partners. Together, this technology supports safer, non-invasive exploration of flooded mines, contributing to the digital transformation of the mining industry.

  • Project duration: 2023-2026
  • Funding scheme: Horizon Europe
