AGEMERA: Muography for Critical Raw Material Exploration

Integrated muographic mapping of deposits and structures

The transition to a low-carbon and digital economy depends heavily on Critical Raw Materials (CRMs). However, Europe remains heavily dependent on CRM imports, making the supply chain vulnerable. To secure these resources sustainably, new exploration methods are needed that minimize environmental and societal impact while at the same time improving efficiency.

The AGEMERA project develops and tests innovative, non-invasive technologies to locate CRM-rich deposits across diverse geological sites. Within AGEMERA, Muon Solutions enhances muographic exploration by integrating several detector types to improve subsurface density imaging. We refine detector designs, upgrade data analysis software, and develop better 3D visualization tools. Our improved muon-based systems are tested at CRM-rich sites in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, and Poland, helping to validate and refine geophysical models.

  • Project duration: 2022-2025
  • Funding scheme: Horizon Europe
