REMHub: Muography for Rare Earth Element Exploration

Using Muons to Map Rare Earth Deposits for a Sustainable Future

Securing a sustainable supply of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) is crucial for Europe’s technological and industrial resilience. The REMHub project develops innovative solutions across the REE value chain, from mineral exploration and extraction to magnet production and recycling, using advanced digital tools and circular economy principles.

Within REMHub, Muon Solutions refines muographic imaging techniques suitable for REE exploration. We assess several different REE-rich sites in Finland to see whether density contrasts between the deposits and host rocks can be reliably detected. We also carry out on-site measurements.

By advancing muon-based geophysical techniques, we help improve resource mapping, contributing to Europe’s broader efforts in REE supply security and sustainable material sourcing.

  • Project duration: 2024-2028
  • Funding scheme: Horizon Europe
